Esoterica: Valid reasons to be annoyed with CBS right now:
° Watson is no longer the accomplished and decorated war hero and army doctor, two aspects of the character which have always, in some way or another, coloured the way the character behaves and the decisions they make. Not only does it…
THANK YOU. I was genuinely excited for Lucy Liu playing Watson, but after reading the details it’s like a systematic removal of her agency. What exactly is Watson’s past, then? What allows Watson to act as an equal to Holmes in this universe? It’s far too close to “tragic woman gets swept off her feet by mysterious asshole” for comfort.
And to top it off, it is erasure of women in the service, and the very real trauma they may carry back home. This was a beautiful opportunity, but I’m already disappointed in this new series. I can only hope that Lucy Liu, who is a extremely capable actor, wouldn’t have chosen a completely problematic role.
This is where I am right now. I’m choosing to exercise cautious optimism out of respect for Lucy Liu. I’m disappointed in the character choices, but I maintain hope that it’ll be better than it sounds and that the actor will be able to elevate the role to something suiting to her stature.
