I wanna come up with new awesome titles for Martha

sourcedumal:

Martha Jones: HBIC

Martha Jones: Stylin on all these heauxz

Martha Jones: The woman who knew when to get out

Martha Jones: The woman who had the Doctor in check

Martha Jones: Is better than you

Martha Jones: Doctor

(Reblogged from sourcedumal)
  • Doctor: Martha, that's an ORDER.
  • Martha: What are you, then, some sort of Dalek?

Martha Jones deserved a better Doctor than she got, and she was better than the Doctor deserved.

Watching the Martha Jones series with people who’ve never seen it before. I completely forgot the part where she grabbed the folding chair and refused to go further until he stopped dismissing her. So much love.

Ok, this is problematic as FUCK.
I fucking HATE this meme of ‘ooh, gurl she don’t need no man!!!’ cuz it feeds from the very RACIST notion that Black women lack the need for love and affection and tenderness, all of which Martha Jones fucking CRAVED throughout season 3 and was DENIED on a regular basis.
Martha Jones was a woman who grew to realize that she isn’t some phantom companion the Doctor used to have, and that was OKAY because she was capable in her own right.
But she wanted her Doctor.
Let there be no mistake about that.
She WANTED the Doctor, but left because she knew she could never have him.

Why We Hate Martha Jones

actualcanadianfemmesherlock:

sarah531:

Well, where to begin…?

She was so jealous of Rose:

Hated her in fact

She was completely useless:

Once more: useless

A third time: useless

No interesting personality traits- imagine how awesome it would have been had they made her, for example, a total geek like us:

And she was so CLINGY

And such a BITCH

She was ALWAYS OBSESSED with the Doctor loving her. I MEAN WHY THE HELL COULDN’T SHE JUST WALK AWAY

She was so WHINY and she NEVER had a GOOD REASON to complain!

I mean, if any of the other companions had been stuck in 1910,
they’d have loved it! Why couldn’t SHE?

Oh, and she was SO. UGLY.

So yes. We HATE HER. And you should too.

Okay guys. I really came to like Martha throughout the series, although I hated her at first.

But THIS makes me change my opinion a bit again.

Really, Martha, REALLY?

Just be bitchy and drop more salt into the wound. Thank you very much.

Considering how badly he’s treated her, I totally get her saying that. Rub right on, Martha. Rub it in good.

…this actually raises a question for me. Rose talked about the visits to the Planet of Breathtakingly Expensive Special Effects We Couldn’t Afford To Show, Donna was shown enjoying a spa vacation on the crystal planet, I believe Amy got a mention of Space Florida with its fully automated sand… the idea that it’s not always running down corridors and things gone horribly awry but those are just the episodes we see has been part of the show.

But in the Martha run, was there ever any mention of between-the-scenes getaways through all of time and space? Or was it all work?

Honestly, I feel like Martha’s one of the most unintentionally well-written characters of any series.  Time after time, the writers’ racism shines through with things like the above, the Doctor’s general insensitivity to the concerns of PoC in certain time periods, and the roles she took with the Doctor (hello, maid!Martha), and yet every time her reaction is - to me at least - incredibly understandable and believable.  This is what’s so confusing to me, that they made a character who reacted as I imagine others would (rightfully!) react in a particular situation, but same writers showed no sensitivity in the types of situation said character was placed in and I… I don’t even know.

Well, I think it’s partly a case of where credit is actually due - writing lines is only part of what goes into a character. A good actor can elevate a poor role, and I think that’s what Freema did. The things the writers didn’t consider, she couldn’t miss, and she made them a part of the character.

Obviously that’s less of a factor in the comic. There I think the writer was going for just bitter snappishness, but because they were unaware of a lot of the actual dynamics around the character, they accidentally a backbone.

[Photoset: 9 pictures of all the black women fandom hates - Sally Donovan (Sherlock), Martha Jones (Doctor Who), Gwen (Merlin), Tara Thornton (True Blood), Mercedes Jones (Glee), Bonnie Bennett (The Vampire Diaries), Raina Thorpe (Gossip Girl), Anastasia Dualla (Battlestar Galactica), Cassie Robinson (Supernatural).]

So, I was thinking about BBC Sherlock fandom’s hate-on for Sally Donovan, and just earlier today I was talking with Maria about Tara Thorton’s shitty treatment in True Blood.

And then I made myself a list.

You’re not fooling anyone, fandom. I know what’s up.

They want these women to be invisible and get upset when they’re not. Then they’re bitches, sexless (i.e. no chemistry with ANYONE), or sluts. And it’s not like the show writers don’t have the same problem, those tropes are a consistent fallback when it comes to any major characterization of black female characters. But when they step out of those tropes (Bonnie becoming more assertive, not just a support system for the white female lead; Martha wanting the Doctor to see her in a romantic way, not just as a support system for the white lead; Gwen being the LOVE object of several male characters, not just a support system for the white lead)  fandom goes apeshit cause their worldview is being messed with. These women are not supposed to be important, loved, complicated in their minds, just easily forgotten once the episode is over.
