Just a theory, not my opinion! just thinking outloud!!!
But, well, I renounced my race. So, Im longer thinking of myself as white (personal opinion, other people can think of me as white, idc). With this Ive met hostility from the African American community and the white community. Lots of hostility.
So, this is just a theory Im not saying its true, but since Im attacked and persecuted by both groups could that mean Im less privileged than both white people and African American people? Not to mention Im also a woman so my gender provides me no privilege either.I receive hate and threats for being a liberal. Im not really privileged it doesnt seem.
Just a thought. Not a statement.
The fact that you think people disagreeing with you is a sign that they have privilege over you shows how little you understand the concept of privilege. (Or disagreement.)
White privilege comes from how others see you. When you’re dealing with a bank or other financial institution, when you apply for a job (even if you decline to specify your race), when you deal with the law… you will be seen as white. Even if you explain that you don’t think of yourself as white.
But then, who does? We grow up thinking we’re the default. We’re presented as the norm. What you’ve done here isn’t a radical step, you’ve just taken a giant leap backwards to the days when you could go through life blissfully aware that you even had a race.
