I’ve never actually seen a coherent argument for why the word literally can’t be used figuratively. Yes, the words “literally” and “figuratively” are opposites, but we’re talking about words, not elemental energy or pokemon or something. The word literal is not weak against figurative. We can whisper the word “loud” and shout the word “quiet”… if I can use the word “truthfully” and be lying, why can the word “literally” not be used figuratively?

You might as well say it’s impossible to use the word “figuratively” in a literal sense because the word means “not literally”.
